More than two-thirds of the world’s oil and gas production comes from existing, mature fields. Oil & Gas has been challenged with the task of finding reserves under increasingly difficult conditions. HPC compute technology has been critical to pinpoint the location of these hard-to-locate fields through the development and use of cutting-edge hardware and software technology. A common method is to deploy arrays of sensors that record seismic reflections, creating vast amounts of raw data from high-resolution sensing systems. Processing this data requires High Performance Compute platforms utilizing new code written for CPUs, GPGPUs and math coprocessors. The process requires a combination of highly efficient data collection and timely transport to a HPC datacenter. These HPC datacenters routinely manage petabytes of data, and the incoming data stream is growing. Oil & Gas teams have requirements for a swift, economical and rugged method to reduce data latency.
